VS CPU Mode is a single player mode available in several Lumines games.

General Information

The objective in VS CPU Mode is to force your opponent into a situation where they can no longer successfully place blocks. The field is split between the player and the CPU opponent, where the player is always on the left of the screen (on the red side of the playing field,) and the CPU is always on the right (on the blue side of the playing field.)

Play begins as soon as the countdown ends. Both the player and the CPU character attempt to create as many squares as possible before the timeline passes. As the timeline finishes passing over a group of squares, those squares are counted and added to the player's total at the top of the corresponding player's side of the screen. When the timeline reaches the end of the field, the dividing line will be pushed towards the player who cleared fewer squares - in the case where both players clear the same amount of squares, the dividing line will not move.

As the game continues, the level will increase, causing the block drop speed to increase rapidly. The winner is determined by whichever player has yet to be rendered unable to place a block.

Progression

In most cases, there are 10 VS CPU stages that must be completed sequentially; the player must always begin on the first stage and stages cannot be skipped. Each stage has an associated skin and character, both of which will be unlocked if the round is won. In Lumines: Puzzle Fusion, if the player loses, they must start again from the beginning, whereas in future titles the stage can be played again.

Trivia

  • In many games, data exists for an 11th CPU opponent and an avatar variation for it. Although this opponent was never used in any Lumines game, the avatar appeared in Lumines: Puzzle Fusion PC.
  • In Lumines Remastered, the Flint avatar can be unlocked by clearing VS CPU mode without retrying any stages.
  • The playable version of the Cheese avatar has different animations than its CPU counterpart.
