Release Information

  • Release date: Fall 2025, exact date currently unknown.
  • A demo is planned for August 2025.
    • A version of this demo was available at Summer Game Fest Play Days, which was on June 7th-9th 2025.
  • Releasing on Playstation 5 and PC. Both platforms include VR support.

General Information

  • The game's aesthetics mirror those of Tetris Effect instead of prior Lumines games.
  • The soundtrack is produced by Hydelic.
  • The following modes are confirmed:
    • Journey
    • Skin Edit/Playlist
    • Endless
    • A training mode is also planned.
    • Gimmick modes akin to Tetris Effect's Effect modes, potentially with new block types, are also planned.
    • Online and local multiplayer is also planned. Multiplayer has been reworked to be more competitive. There are multiple multiplayer modes. Details are unknown.
  • The requirements to top out have been adjusted. You now need to try to place a block on two max height columns in order to top out.
    • Placing a block on a single max height column will cause the block to split into two pieces, which drop on each side of the max height column.
  • A new gameplay feature, Burst, has been added.
    • The number attached to the timeline is now a meter for when Burst is activateable.
      • The meter goes up by 1 for every square created.
      • Burst can be activated when the meter is at 50. It maxes out at 100, showing "MAX" instead of a number.
    • During Burst, the number on the timeline shows you how many sweeps you have left before Burst ends.
      • At maximum, Burst lasts for 6 sweeps.
    • Burst prevents your largest square from being cleared for a limited number of sweeps, allowing you to add onto it freely.
    • Squares of opposite color touching the Burst will be removed from the play field and held at the top of the screen when the Burst reaches a new size (for example, growing from 2x2 to 3x3).
  • Avatars have been completely reworked, and are now all humanoid.
    • Avatars are now customizable. The full scope of details is unknown.
    • Avatars will have a mechanical use within the game. Details are unknown.
    • Lumines Arise claims to have the most avatars out of the entire series.
      • More avatars will also be added in post-launch updates.
  • A variety of accessibility options that have not been present in previous Lumines games will also be available.

Skins

All skins are new to the series. A full list of skins is currently unknown. The game advertises "over 30 handcrafted stages". Currently, 10 skins have been revealed in official media.

A video on the Steam page shows regular gameplay, with a longer version in the presskit. The presskit video has been uploaded on Gematsu's YouTube channel. The three skins features in this video are available in the Summer Game Fest demo.

Trivia

  • Pre-production started during the COVID-19 pandemic.
    • This had an effect on the overarching story and theming of the game.
    • Pre-production mostly consisted of director Takashi Ishihara sketching concept art.
    • The length of pre-production was quoted as "a year or two, easily" by Ishihara.
  • Full-scale production started after Tetris Effect: Connected was finished.
    • As of June 8th, 2025, the game has been in full scale development for at least 3 years.
  • The addition of prior skins was considered, but ultimately rejected due to licensing and thematic issues. If they were added, they likely would've been bonus unlocks or in a side mode.
  • A large amount of inspiration was taken from concepts that were unable to be put into Tetris Effect.
  • Having the DualSense controller react to certain skin features was thought about, but seemingly not implemented.
  • The as of now unnamed chameleon-themed skin was at least partially inspired by old wall art of a chameleon in the Q? Entertainment offices.[1]
