Puzzle Mode

Puzzle Mode is a game mode first appearing in Lumines: Puzzle Fusion. In this mode, the player tries to make shapes using Blocks.

Overview

In Puzzle Mode, the player is tasked with creating a shape or pattern as shown on the right side of the screen within a given time limit. Blocks of either color can be used for this purpose, but Blocks orthogonally adjacent to the shape being made must be of different color. Most shapes also require some sort of support, so the player must think how to make sure the supporting Blocks do not get erased by the Timeline.

Lumines: Puzzle Fusion

In Lumines: Puzzle Fusion, there are a total of 26 Puzzles. Most of these Puzzles have the player make a shape or pattern, while two of these instead have a task that the player has to complete. Once all 26 of these Puzzles are completed, the player must redo them in Double Puzzles (X2).

Lumines II and later

In games starting from Lumines II, there are a total of 100 Puzzles, grouped into three difficulty categories: Easy, Hard, and Super Hard (Very Hard in Lumines LIVE!). Easy Puzzles are usually small and simple, while Hard Puzzles are larger and more complex, and Super Hard Puzzles are very demanding in regards to skills and speed, with some of them, such as "Fork, Knife and Spoon" and "0, 1, 2 and 3", requiring the player to create multiple shapes in a particular order.

Some of the Puzzles, such as "Pyramid" and "G Clef", occupy a large chunk of the playfield and cause the player to run out of space for the Puzzle, while some others, such as "Fountain" and "Typhoon Mark", are pretty intricate and demand a great deal of precision, so as to make sure all orthogonally adjacent Blocks are of different color, and some others, such as "Letter 'O'" and "Headphones", require the player to actually make Squares that will inevitably be erased by the Timeline, in which case a quick reaction is crucial.

There are 40 Easy Puzzles immediately available at start. Once these Puzzles are cleared, 30 Hard Puzzles become available. Upon clearing these Puzzles, 30 Super Hard Puzzles become available.

Unlockables

In Lumines: Puzzle Fusion and Lumines PLUS, completing all Normal Puzzles unlocks the bonus Skin 45 degrees, which would subsequently become a bonus Skin commonly unlocked from Puzzle Mode, while completing all X2 Puzzles unlocks the bonus Skin prime factor.

In games from Lumines II to Lumines Supernova, there are four bonus Skins that can be unlocked from Puzzle Mode, each by clearing all Puzzles within a single difficulty category. Once all 100 Puzzles are cleared, the bonus Skin Manager class used for Puzzle Mode becomes available to play.

In Lumines Remastered, there are three Avatars that can be unlocked by clearing all Puzzles within each difficulty category. Once all 100 Puzzles are cleared, the bonus Skin 45 degrees is also unlocked.

Trivia

  • In the US/EU version of Lumines: Puzzle Fusion, Puzzle #19 is "UFO", changed from "Fylfot" in the Japanese version, likely to avoid confusion with the Nazi swastika. This change also applies to its X2 Puzzle counterpart (Puzzle #45).
    • This particular version of the "UFO" Puzzle is two blocks shorter in length than Puzzles of the same name in subsequent games.
  • The "[◌], [×], [△] and [□]" Puzzle is based on the face buttons found on the controllers for the Sony PlayStation consoles.
  • The music used for this mode from Lumines II and on is featured in the album L.II Remixes.
  • In Lumines LIVE!, there are 10 Puzzles in the base game. All 90 other Puzzles have to be unlocked by purchasing the Puzzle/Mission Pack.
  • In the Steam release of Lumines: Puzzle Fusion, only Easy Puzzles are available in the base game. All other Puzzles have to be unlocked by purchasing the Advance Pack.
